Gary Campbell has had a 27-year career working with Oregon’s running backs. Among the school’s 14 1,000-yard single-season rushers, Gary Campbell has coached 12 of them, including Jonathan Stewart, who set the school’s single-season mark with 1,722 in 2007. During the 2001-2002 season Coach Campbell had two running backs rush for over 1,000 yards with Maurice Morris and Onterrio Smith. In 2008, running backs Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount duplicated that feat rushing for 1,201 yards and 1,002 yards respectively while also breaking the single-season rushing record they set in the previous year, racking up 3,641 yards on the ground.
In 2009-2010, Gary Campbell helped with the emergence of freshman sensation LaMichael James who set the Pac-10 freshman rushing record with 1,546 yards and 14 TD’s. The success on the ground is no surprise as Coach Campbell’s running back units have typically dominated the Pac-10, leading the conference in rushing for the past four years. Over the last three seasons, Coach Campbell has produced four 1,000 yard rushers.
Coach Cam on his coaching style…
"Every now and then I’ll get on a guy, but right after that I’m giving them a pat on the back and a hug to let them know I love them. If something just goes wrong, I feel like it’s my place to correct it and leave the player with some dignity."
